Yellowstone National Park - Day 8

We got up early, checked the weather and road conditions on YNP website, all roads listed open. We were planning to drive to Hayden Pass to look for wildlife, but the road was closed drove when we got to High Falls area. Just as we rounded a curve in the road we came across a black bear crossing the road (CLICK FOR DASH CAM VIDEO) on his way to the hillside to eat berries. The bear was right at the area where the road had been closed, so we just stopped in a parking lot of an attraction that was closed for the season and enjoyed watching the bear for about a half hour or so. Here are a few more video links of the bear on the hillside, taken with our cell phones. Bear Video #1 / Bear Video #2 / Bear Video #3 / Bear Video #4 . We also came upon the group of Big Horn Sheep (Sheep Video) again after we turned around at the closed road and headed back.

El Malpais National Monument - Joe Skeen Campground

Great dry camping site in western New Mexico. After World War II, the Bureau of Land Management became the administrator of the area. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan designated El Maloais a unit of the National Park Service. It is jointly managed with the nearby El Morro National Monument.

Wichita Falls - Texas

We enjoyed a brief stay at the city campground in Wichita Falls, Texas. Site #20. Electrical hookups, water, and a dump station are available for a reasonable price. We walked to Jason's Deli for dinner. The river that runs next to the park was extremely high. Check out THIS LINK FOR VIDEO Sentimental note; we pedaled through Wichita Falls back in 1985 on our cross country bicycle trip to San Diego, CA, from Tybee Island, GA. Pretty much had the park to ourselves

I Am Thankful

I am thankful for so many things in my life. Four years ago when I was still principal, I wrote the following column for the PTSA newsletter and titled it, "I Am Thankful." Thought I'd share it again... Principal’s Letter - November 2007 As I sit here contemplating the topic for this month’s edition of the Dodgen Dateline the first thing that comes to mind is to take inventory of the things for which I am thankful.  It is, after all, that time of year.  First, I am thankful that my list includes items such as a wonderful family, adequate food and shelter, and employment at the best middle school in the United States.  Of course I could go on for many more pages.  I am blessed indeed.  How about instead, I share some things from my list that I am sure you would not have guessed?  The baseball that has scrawled on it the words “I love you very much,” comes to mind.  The words were writ...
